This is the last day of the three day conference in the COPOUS. This reporter in Liberty Times finally gained the access to update the latest news from the conference. Two countries with great influence around the world behaved definitely beyond our expectations, or we could say there isn’t much consensus between the countries, which is we couldn’t see the purposes of these countries to participated in.
The delegate of USA had been asked about the voting selection on the AMD (S/2024/323) proposed by China and Russia last year (2024), which states that “shall not place nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in outer space.” We knew that the USA rejected this AMD. It seems that this contradict with the idea she mentioned the previous session, “space should only be use in researches.” However, this reporter thinks the delegate of USA is trying to escape their responsibility to solve the problems.
“Withdrawing all the weapons on space is impossible for two reasons, development and national security,” the USA replied. The USA involved the ability to influence other countries who participated in this conference. It appeared that the USA believed that development of specific countries is more important than maintaining the peace in outer space. Is the USA trying to support the countries who benefits them to develop more military weapons in outer space? Or is the conference just a joke to her? We couldn’t tell from this answer, but all we can know is that the purpose of her participation is a mystery.
And for Russian Federation, which is also an influenceable countries around the globe, we can only said that her real actions and her proposals are ridiculous. In previous sessions these days, Russia is always insisting that their goal is to ensure developing countries to have the ability to explore outer space and maintain the peace of outer space. However, the urgent crisis happened during the conference showed that Russia is the most suspicious one who caused this ACCIDENT. What’s worst, she FIRMLY denied that this crisis was caused by her government and refused to answered the questions of this reporter.
Isn’t this a joke? The crisis is an urgent problem for countries to solve, but Russia is actually the one who is causing the UNPEACE in the outer space, which, her goal is to support the peaceful from outer space.
We can’t see much hope for countries to solve the problem in this conference, but this reporter wish that countries can hopefully make a consensus and practice what they preach in the following session.
