The United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) will convene on January 21st to discuss pressing challenges surrounding arms control and sustainable development in outer space. With growing concerns over the militarization of space and increasing geopolitical tensions, the meeting aims to foster inclusive dialogue and explore pathways for a unified regulatory framework.

Key topics on the agenda include balancing arms control with national security, ensuring equitable access to space for all nations, and enhancing trust among member states to overcome political stalemates. Representatives from both technologically advanced and developing countries will collaborate to propose frameworks that reflect the evolving dynamics of space activities.

“The peaceful and sustainable use of outer space is a shared responsibility. We must prioritize dialogue over division to protect space for future generations,” said the Chair of COPUOS.

The meeting will last for three days, with the hope of reaching a consensus on the issues of concern. Further updates on the outcomes of the meeting will follow.
