R.I.P. The Tragic Plane Crash and the Deaths of the Two Presidents of Rwanda and Burundi
Following the breaking news, the deaths of the presidents of Rwanda and Burundi, Juvénal Habyarimana and Cyprian Ntaryamira, have been confirmed, causing profound sorrow among all delegates at the conference.
As of now, UNAMIR personnel were unable to investigate the plane crash due to a blockade by government forces. The author also expresses deep sorrow over this tragic event. The author hopes that the conference can expedite its proceedings to prevent further tragedies.
Can the Crisis Be Solved This Time?
At the beginning of the fifth session, the situation concerning Rwanda aggravated. It was reported that Belgian soldiers had been killed in the capital of Rwanda, Kigali.
Thankfully, the crisis was resolved in just a short time. However, there were some questionable points in Draft Directive 2.1. For example, Belgium, whose soldiers were killed in Kigali, still consented to the decision to send troops to Rwanda along with other countries. This seemed contradictory to its nation’s interests.
What the author wants to emphasize is that the attitude of the delegates has significantly shifted from their previous positions. The author is glad to see that all delegates are willing to dedicate their efforts to addressing the crisis. However, the author highly recommends that all delegates think carefully before taking any further actions.
